Cold Wax Painting at Monster Drawing Rally
In which I share the work I made for Kimball Art Center's annual Monster Drawing Rally, a live-action spectator and DJ-fueled art-making competition.
On Saturday, I competed in the Monster Drawing Rally at the Kimball Art Center. If I am in town, I make sure to participate in this really wonderful fundraiser for the arts. The premise is that a whole bunch of artists make art during a “heat” with the goal of finishing a piece in that hour long time period all with spectators wandering around watching them work. When they are finished, they hand the art off to a volunteer, who brings it to the front where the spectators can attempt to win the artwork. Anyone interested in it, will pick a card from a deck, and whoever has an Ace wins the work and pays just $50 for it.
It’s really exciting and interesting to watch the artists work. And very cool to come home with an original piece of art made live in front of your own eyes. In fact, we ended up with our very own charcoal drawing of a Uinta Ground Squirrel (aka Potguts) and the Utah state flower, the sego lily by Anna Nizhoni.
First of all, it’s an amazing drawing, but second, there are so many potguts where we live that it’s comical. They will destroy the wiring in your car by eating the electrical wires if you aren’t careful. So it’s a special homage to an animal we find quite annoying actually, but pervasive in our lives.
But back to Monster Drawing. In years past, I’ve done either watercolors or painted with the inks. This year, I decided to go with the Cold Wax paintings, since I’ve really been getting the hang of them. Patrons of my project, will get to see what I made during the rally. And you can join the group for just $5 a month to see what I’ve been working on and how I will have completed 100 cold wax paintings soon! In addition, patrons of this project will also help me pick their favorite paintings to use in my 2025 art calendar, get first dibs when the painting sale goes live, AND a discount on the work.
